Five Things you should know about Olympic Boxing

Thanks very much to a very busy Kenny Egan for providing a quick Five Things we should all know about Olympic Boxing

1) Men’s boxing has been an Olympic sport since 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States. It was not contested at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm because Swedish law banned the sport at the time.

2) 2008 has been the most successful year in Irish amateur boxing history.

3) Ireland’s last Olympic boxing medal before 2008 was Michael Carruth in 1992 in Barcelona.

4) Boxing is considered one of the most physically demanding of Olympic sports.

5) Never fight a Chinese man in China!

It was pretty cool to speak with Kenny Egan and I’m delighted he could spare a few minutes to provide the above points. While the last point is in as a bit of a joke, I’m sure Kenny as well as every neutral person watching that final fight thought he was robbed. I did hear him mention on RTEs “The Panel” that it took him 6 weeks to watch that fight after he came home. I suppose enough has been said about it at this stage. Best of luck for the future Kenny!
