I still haven’t decided exactly what it is I want to do if/when I start a business.
I hope that it will appeal to Enterprise Ireland for grant funding.
The Idea
Problem solving business
The “Wouldn’t it be good if …….” idea.
Wouldn’t it be good if there was an automated BUT CHEAP process in place that 100% ensured I go to the gym every second day. (I’m already expecting plenty smartass emails on this “idea”. IT’S JUST AN EXAMPLE!)
Copycat Idea
Copying an existing model, improve it and put my own spin on it.
The huge benefit of going in this direction is that it can be very easy to see what mistakes are being made others. There have been many recently blogged cases of poor customer service at restaurants. There may be a market (even in these tough times) for a nice restaurant with standard food and a good customer service. People DEAL with PLEASANT people. I have seen the dragons often make comments like “I’m not a huge fan of the IDEA, but I really like the PERSON” and they end up doing business. The copy cat idea is the one that makes most appeal to me right now. I WILL NOT BE OPENING A RESTAURANT.
The genuine innovation
This is where I go for long walks waiting for that EUREKA moment to pop into my brain. Myself and Fred once came up with the fantastic idea of a pill that a man could take in the morn that would include breakfast and a shave. Thankfully we decided not to invest too much money into chemistry sets.
I’ll be thinking away. If there’s anyone out there with a fantastic idea but no one to turn to, give me a shout.

If the entire Barton Fink movie could be about a guy trying to come up with a movie, then surely there’s a much-needed gap in the market for an e-business based on not having an e-business idea. I thought about recycling empty Irish water bottles for the tourist market, gift-packaging them empty in a nice presentation box as Pure Irish Spring Water with the instruction Dilute to taste

Hi Joe,
The thought of approaching Enterprise Ireland or something similar to try and raise funding intimidates and frustrates me and I’m sure I’m not alone.
Maybe your service could be a facility to support these types of people.
Interview companies that will be approaching EI to give them feedback, Dragons Den style with assistance from entrepreneurs in Cork who have acutally done something.
Assist them filling out the forms etc or even supply them with a person who could approach EI on their behalf essentially outsourcing the work of raising capital.

@Gordon – very strange you should mention that since I had a conversation with someone in the know about the very same thing at the weekend. Could be onto something!
@Nick – I love the water Idea! Also your blog is cool, I have a brother with Down syndrome and always hoped if I ever started a business that I would love to have DSI as a charity partner. In fact I have already had some positive correspondence with them about it. Thanks for your comment.

@Gordon Nice idea. Kind of like a factory that makes factories! Could be a very cool service though…
