Big thanks this week to Matt and Michael Kane from Curious Wines for Five Things you should know about Wine just in time for Christmas.
1. As early as 4000 BC, the Egyptians were the first people to use corks as stoppers.
2. Most wine critics would agree that the best wines are made from the grapes of Riesling and Pinot Noir, partly because they have the greatest expression of “terrior” (where they are grown)
3. The colour of a wine is determined by the grape variety and the amount of time the winemaker allows the grape juice to remain in contact with the skins.
4. Rose bushes are often planted at the end of a row of grape vines to act as an early warning signal for infestation by diseases and insects like aphids.
5. Red wine is a rich source of antioxidants. It has been proven to increase good cholesterol, reduce bad cholesterol, prevent blood clots and lower the risk of heart attack.
Some nice information here, poor rose bushes being used on the front line like that! Don’t forget to check out the glitzy Curious Wines website.

Interesting facts Joe, I never realised the cork was used for stoppers back in 4000 BC.
Now I am off to have another glass of red – purely to improve my cholesterol!

Good information Joe, didn’t know about the rose bushes. I’m off to buy more for the holidays, nice to know a celebatory drink here and there might have a few health benefits.
